Kchi Pôntegok - Revisiting the Historic Landscape of the Bellows Falls Petroglyphs: NPS Awards an URC Grant

Some very good news today:

The US National Park Service has awarded an Underrepresented Communities Grant (from the Historic Preservation Fund) to the Town of Rockingham, VT (Village of Bellows Falls) for a proposal entitled "Kchi Pôntegok - Revisiting the Historic Landscape of the Bellows Falls Petroglyphs". The Town as qualified municipal applicant is partnering with Elnu Abenaki Tribe to amend and enhance the existing National Register of Historic Places listing of the petroglyph site, bringing Indigenous voices into the dialogue around one of the most significant and, at the same time, disrespected cultural landscapes in the northeast. We look forward to shifting the narrative, honoring the traditional relationships in place here, and working toward meeting our responsibilities together. Please stay posted for progress in the many months ahead.
